Tatarstan Parliament Speaker Farid Mukhametshin's greetings on International Mother Language Day |

Dear citizens of Tatarstan! I would like to congratulate you on International Mother Language Day.
According to various estimates, there are more than 6000 living languages in the world today. What we find worrying is that many of them are under the threat of complete disappearance as their speakers - representatives of small nations contact with more powerful linguistic environment and lose their mother language, loose connections with the culture of their ancestors. The International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in November 1999. It has been observed annually on February 21 since 2000 to promote peace and multilingualism around the world and to protect all mother languages.
Languages are the most powerful instruments of preserving and developing our tangible and intangible heritage. All moves to promote the dissemination of mother tongues will serve not only to encourage linguistic diversity and multilingual education but also to develop fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions throughout the world and to inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue.
Today I would like to congratulate you on the International Mother Language Day and to wish you strengthen mutual respect and cooperation in Russia. Be part of your ethnic group and be more attentive and tolerant to each other. Let the International Mother Language Day become the holiday of peace, kindness and friendship!
