On March 22 Tatarstan Parliament Speaker Farid Mukhametshin chaired a meeting of the Current Affairs Committee of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe. During the meeting he informed the European colleagues about the terrorist attacks at Brussels airport and a metro station. Parliamentarians honored the memory of the victims with a moment of silence.
Then the committee members discussed strategies to combat radicalization. Amid dramatic increase in refugees from the Middle East and Africa, taking preventive measures against radicalization are of vital importance now. The Congress members are unanimous on the point that timely measures and correct policy in the field of international relations will cost the government less than elimination of the ethnic conflicts consequences.
According to the 384th resolution, that Congress adopted last year, main factors causing radicalization are insufficient integration of migrants into European society, political disunity and growing number of extremist organizations. The Committee members underlined the importance of external dimension of the fight against terrorism.
Today Farid Mukhametshin is participating in the debate of the Congress’ plenary session, where he intends to tell European parliamentarians about the experience of the Russian Federation and Tatarstan in the fight against extremism. He noted the big role of non-governmental public organizations of Tatarstan, such as the Assembly of Peoples of Tatarstan, in implementation of national policies. This organization is an ethnic and cultural center for about 80 national and cultural autonomies.
On March 23 Farid Mukhametshin will take part in a meeting of the Chamber of Regions of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe.
